Alan Wake

Alan Wake is  a game I put off for many years for no specific reason, I just had other games to play. But I’m glad I finally bought it for 5€ in some sale about two years ago. Played it later that year and well I wasn’t disappointed.

“The story follows best-selling thriller novelist Alan Wake, as he tries to uncover the mystery behind his wife’s disappearance during a vacation in the small fictional town of Bright Falls, Washington, all while experiencing events from the plot in his latest novel, which he cannot remember writing, coming to life.” -Wikipedia

Alan Wake is a good game. It’s not a game I remember for 10 years and feel like I want to forget it just so I could play it again. But it’s definitely good and worth playing. The game was and still is innovative in its use of light as a weapon alongside the other guns you can carry (Revolver, Shotgun, Pump Action Shotgun, Hunting Rifle, Flare Gun). You make the enemies (The Taken) weaker with your flashlight (that also is your ‘crosshair’) or any other available light source and then finish them off with a gun. Ammo is of course needed for the flashlight and Alan prefers using Energizer batteries found conveniently in sheds and houses.

The plot is fairly interesting and the controls are quite fluent and suitable for the exploration and combat style of the game. The plot makes you want to keep going and finish the game. There are some frustrating battle scenes but nobody’s perfect.

Considering the age of the game, it also looks pretty. And it’s actually a little scary too.
